The Rockwell R6522P is a versatile Peripheral Interface Adapter (PIA) manufactured by Rockwell, specifically the -31 revision from 1988. Fabricated using NMOS technology, the R6522P provides two 8-bit bidirectional I/O ports (Port A and Port B) along with four control lines (CA1, CA2, CB1, CB2) for interfacing with peripheral devices. Each I/O port can be configured as either an input or output via software control. The device incorporates two programmable 16-bit timer/counters with single-shot or interval timing capabilities. An interrupt flag is generated upon timer expiration or external signal transitions on the control lines. The R6522P operates on a single +5V power supply and interfaces directly with the 6502 microprocessor family via the system data and address buses, enabling efficient data transfer and control of external peripherals.
