Product Details:

Overview

The BENCHMARQ BQ2004E is a highly integrated switch-mode battery charger IC designed for single, dual, triple, or quadruple cell NiCd and NiMH battery packs. Its primary function is to deliver precisely controlled charging current and voltage, featuring advanced battery temperature monitoring with hot/cold profile detection to optimize charge termination and prevent overcharging, a critical consideration for extending battery lifespan and ensuring system safety. While offering a robust 2A maximum charge current, designers must carefully manage input voltage ripple and transient response, as the BQ2004E’s standalone control topology, while simplifying implementation, requires external filtering to maintain stable operation under dynamic load conditions.

Key Features

  • Supports 1-4 Series NiCd/NiMH Cells
  • Maximum Charge Current: 2A
  • Integrated Battery Temperature Thermistor Monitoring (Hot/Cold Profile)
  • Input Voltage Range: 4.5V to 5.5V
  • Switch-Mode Buck Control Topology
  • Compact 16-SOIC Package

Applications

The component is engineered for deployment in systems requiring high reliability and performance under specific operating conditions. It provides functional stability across the stated design envelope.

  • Intelligent battery pack management for portable power tools
  • Fast charging circuits for consumer electronics with NiMH battery arrays
  • Robust charging solutions for emergency backup power systems
  • Temperature-compensated charging in remote sensor nodes
